Sonny Assu's Landlines is a painting and collage series that sees nautical charts paired with Kwakwaka'wakw formline. In line with his Speculator Boom series and as a progression to The Paradise Syndrome, Landlines was inspired by a Hupacasath man's response to early colonial surveyors demarcating the boundaries of his reserve: “They make magic lines on the land that only they can see.” Assu is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is informed by Kwakwaka'wakw and Western principles of art-making. Assu received his BFA from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2002 and his MFA from Concordia University in 2017. His work has been accepted into the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa) Seattle Art Museum Vancouver Art Gallery and various other public and private collections across Canada, the US and the UK.
