Shelley Niro’s
Abnormally Aboriginal is about categories, slots of convenience, labels and names that make it easy to situate an individual, as well as readily recognize and dismiss them. In this context, Niro used the format of self-portrait to describe her journey through life, exploring where she fit in and what effect this had on her contributions to the circumstances around her. Niro was born in Niagara Falls, NY, and is a member of the Six Nations Reserve, Bay of Quinte Mohawk, Turtle Clan. She obtained her MFA at Western University. In 2012, Niro was the inaugural recipient of the Ontario Arts Council’s Aboriginal Arts Award, and in 2017 she received the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Scotiabank Photography Award, and the Hnatyshyn Foundation REVEAL Indigenous Art Award. In 2019, Niro received an honorary doctorate from OCAD University. Recently, she produced her film THE INCREDIBLE 25th YEAR OF MITZI BEARCLAW.
