Note:
A pupil of John Riley (1646-91), Richardson drew and etched portraits and wrote books on art and art theory. He made a great number of portrait drawings, mostly in black chalk, including self-portraits at various ages with long curly hair. In all of these, he was seated facing the same direction and wearing a white cravat with overcoat.
